A 4-DAY JOURNEY INTO THE EVERYDAY LIFE OF THE MIRDITA HIGHLANDER

This is not an experience designed to observe how a highlander lives in the mountains of Mirdita. It is a journey to enter their rhythm, if only for a few days.
In Mirdita, hospitality is sacred. It begins with a fire lit at the hearth, coffee slowly roasted, and a shared meal known as “bread, salt, and an open heart.”
The journey begins in Lufaj, where nature and life are so deeply intertwined that they naturally draw you in. The guesthouse belongs to both God and guest; around the hearth, words command respect, yet leave room for laughter. The sound of traditional instruments fills the air, and old village games quietly return to life.
The second day opens along ancient paths and in places where even the stones seem to speak. The Cave of the Earth, inhabited towers, and projects rooted in daily life rather than performance reveal that Mirdita preserves memory not for museums, but for continuous living.
Riding on horseback toward the hilltops, the pace slows. Lunch is laid out on wooden tables, on woolen sheepskins, beneath the open sky.
In Orosh and Domgjon, life becomes more intimate. Visitors are no longer observers, but guests who share the table, the bread, and the wine. Dinner is prepared as it is for the family, simple and sincere, and the guests are woven into the family.
In the evening, the spoken word rises through the verses of Father Gjergj Fishta, a living memory of a man who understood the soul of the highlander of these lands.
The third day continues through workshops, artisans, and homes where knowledge and ancestral skills are still passed down by hand. In Gojan, Shkozë, Fushë-Arrëz, and Kryezi, tradition is not demonstrated, it continues to live, as if no century has passed.
The journey ends where it began, with a “welcome” that now carries a deeper meaning. Not because Mirdita was seen, but because, for a few days, it was lived.
This journey does not seek to change you. It reminds you what it means to live simply, resiliently, and deeply connected to the homeland, the legacy passed down through generations.
